Cian O'Dwyer, immature and twenty-eight, "ends up" in the Portuguese capital, escaping from a life in Dublin that has become "sour and spoiled". In Lisbon he is torn between the dissolute world of an ex-pat English teacher, and life among the locals. He works in the London School where, he soon discovers, all is not as it seems.

A Year in Lisbon is a novel with a strong sense of place, where the city itself is a protagonist in the story. This story is one of loss, change and second chances, with a cast of finely drawn characters that entertain and engage. Funny, rich and wide-ranging, it is Lorcan McNamee's first novel.

A Year in Lisbon A novel edition by Lorcan McNamee Literature Fiction eBooks

This is certainly a travelogue of Lisbon. Names of areas, streets, sites are scattered like confetti and will be amusing and interesting for those who can join up the dots but for those who don't know the city, such extravagant emphasis on these names leaves the reader empty. This is a hollow tale that has not meat to it. One gets the impression that one is reading the journal of an unhappy Irishman who decides to up-sticks from a failed relationship in Dublin for a new start in Lisbon. If there is humour in the story, this reader did not connect with it nor did any of the themes or characters develop or go anywhere.

A Year in Lisbon A novel edition by Lorcan McNamee Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This novel will make you want to visit Lisbon, drive on an old tram and drink sweet coffee. You will enjoy getting to know Cian in his disarming self absorbtion. It's funny, and Irish and human. There's a tension throughout the story that might make you anxious! I really look forward to Lorcan Mc Namee's next novel...this was a delight.
I bought this book to get a feel for Lisbon and its neighborhoods. And, it was useful for that. But, otherwise, it is a terrible book. There is not a single character in the book that was appealing. I did not care about any of them. Moreover, the editing job was awful. Here are a few examples. The word "effect" was used when it should have been "affect." And, the word "ally" was when the reference was to an "alley." In sum, don't waste your time!!
